Link to the first maiden: • Chrysalis 2m Electric Sailplane Maide... Story: Somewhere in 2016. I was flying my brothers 2m Chrysalis, he wasn't even there, but I had heard how great a flier it was so I wanted to try it out. After preflight checks I gave it a throw and gasped at the ease and grace it flew with. It was the largest wingspan I had flown so I was interested in taking it up higher than I could on my largest plane at the time (40 inch wing I think). Another brother of mine was there and started telling my I should bring it lower, at that point I was feeling very confident still in my ability to see and control it, not quite so high was the nickel at arms length yet. Maybe half dollar. Of course I was just gliding around at this point, motor off, I wasn't looking for lift, just slowly coming down I thought. The plane crisscrossed the sky with purpose, it's elliptical looking wings and tail looking amazing against low, densely packed cumulus clouds. I vaguely thought that I might find some thermals feeding those clouds. A few minutes later a wind started to carry it downfield, and I simultaneously noticed for the first time the plane was much higher now. My pleasure giving way to worry it was now smaller than a nickel at arms length. Trying to track back against the wind but didn't seem to be making much progress. I tried to put it into a dive to maybe move into lower and slower air but got reversed briefly and worried I was over the far trees. Panicking, the Chrysalis and moving away and rapidly up it was now much less than a dime at arms length. Among my many mistakes was not employing the spoilers to counteract all that lift. A few minutes later I realized I had lost control of the flight surfaces. The last 20 seconds I ever saw the plane it was gracefully as ever but terribly now, diving. It looked like a vertical dive, now maybe two or three gnats hugging each other at arms length (I'm not sure how it could have been stable in this dive.. but that's how it looked), until it disappeared behind the tree line in the forest. I measured the compass bearing, decide the possible range of distance, walked the route a few times, went home at dark and came back the next day with a pie shaped GPS path and walks all over it using the GPS to make sure I covered the whole area and looking in the canopy and the ground. We flew a plane over the rest of the high grass field with a camera looking for it, but never did find it. Sometimes I still think about it... Probably sitting under a tree somewhere in there. I picture it intact. I just finished rebuilding it (yeah I know it took long enough) and my brother and maidened it last weekend. Such a beautiful plane. Part of the way through the video you see it flying itself, with his thumb off the controls for a while.
