Roosterfish, Spanish mackerel, jack crevalles and more can all at times be caught from the beach. This past January and February my life Lauren and I guided two groups of anglers and their wives from the USA in Costa Rica. We explored the jungle, saw sloths and monkeys, and went fishing! On this day birds and bait had appeared suddenly and without warning on the beach immediately in front of our rental houses. The fish looked small so I grabbed my Van Staal VR50 with 20lb braided line. The bait looked small too, so I tied on a 3/8 ounce pink Mighty Fish epoxy jig, which would end up being one of the "hot lures" of the entire trip. About 20 minutes into casting a big swirl appeared behind the epoxy jig, and I received a hard strike on the line. Instantly line began RIPPING from my VR50 reel and at times I thought I might be spooled! Finally after an epic battle I landed the largest surf-caught jack crevalle of the trip.
