Yliki is a jewel that attracts the interest of all nature lovers for its magnificent landscape and the great importance of its habitat.It is a natural lake,north of Thebes,Greece with steep banks,at the foot of the western extensions of Mount Ptoos and the eastern ones of Messapi. It is also called Liqueri,and has an average area of ​​19.1 sq.km. It took its name from the city of Yli,which was built on its banks, as was the city of Akraiphia.Its waters poured into the neighboring lake Trefia or Ungria,the Paralimni of modern times.Very close to Yliki there was a large temple of the god Apollo, who had the nickname "Ptoos" from the neighboring mountain of the same name. A unique wetland Yliki is the 9th largest lake in the country and has a maximum depth of 50 meters.It has been found that the endemic species of kalamithra lives on its bottom,which we find only here in the entire Balkans.Carps that have been enriched with fry also swim in its waters.During the winter months,it also hosts a considerable number of birds that come to winter.It is a real aquatic treasure of great biological and aesthetic value,which magnetizes the visitor.
