How to manage Vocal Cord Polyp in Teachers? - Dr. Sriram Nathan

Vocal cord polyp more common in teachers is what you call vocal cord nodule. It is called teacher’s nodule or shop keeper’s nodule. In this case the nodule is a swelling similar to the polyp, but little more smaller and it usually happens in both the right and left vocal cords. You see that polyps are usually unilateral, however nodules can be bilateral. Nodules usually indicate chronic use of voice, that means you are using your voice for a long period of time. Well polyp indicate that there is a recent onset of vocal abuse. For e.g. you are suffering from a cold and you suddenly strain your voice. That usually lead to vocal cord polyp rather than a nodule. In any case teachers should make sure that you should not speak for long time, you should take frequent breaks when you are speaking, you don’t scream, you don’t whisper, avoid oily spicy food and things which are sour like lemon, orange, pineapple. Cold items are also generally avoided. We also recommend not to do extensive gargling that actually increases the problem. In any case you have vocal cord problem, you have voice change, you have a doubt that it could be a pulp or nodule it is imperative you see a laryngologist or an ENT physician who is expert in larynx problem as soon as possible so that he can properly guide you on the proper treatment.
