Planting Trees Along a River Side | Field Trip | One Tree Planted

In Planting Trees Along a River Side, we explore a planting site that is located in New Brunswick, Canada, together with our One Tree Planted Project Manager Stephanie! Join us as we visit a riparian restoration project where around 50,000 trees were planted in partnership with the Nashwaak Watershed Association. The property where planting took place is owned by the city of Fredericton, N.B., and by planting native hardwoods that would have been there historically, we are helping to restore the land to a historic silver maple dominated floodplain forest. Once silver maple trees take off here, they grow an incredible 3ft each year! Willow trees are also incorporated along the river bank to help stabilize the riparian area and reduce soil erosion. After we visit our planting site, our partners show us around a thriving site that was planted prior to our partnership. From this, we can envision what our project may look like in 4-6 years! This land was planted with a mix of native hardwood species, including silver maple and burr oak. During the flood season, these trees are typically completely submerged, conditions for which they have a range of adaptations, including sprouting more stems and digging deep into the soil. Thanks to these adaptations, these trees thrive and benefit from being in this unique environment.
