Get Familiar with Energy Ratings There are three primary methods of rating a piece of HVAC equipment: AFUE - Furnace Heating SEER - AC and Heat Pump Cooling HSPF - Heat Pump Cooling We have videos and blogs that go into more depth with each metric. In all cases, the higher the number, the more efficient the piece of equipment is. 2. Get an Energy Audit Contact your local electric company and ask if this is a service they can perform. They will look at how your home is built, what appliances and equipment you own, and how you use electricity. 3. Make Sure Your Equipment is the Right Size Like we just said, having the right size of equipment is a crucial part of your HVAC system’s energy efficiency. Having HVAC equipment that is too large or too small will draw an unnecessary amount of energy, heat and cool your home unevenly, and damage your equipment. 4. Be Thoughtful with Your Home’s Features Your stove, oven, dryer, blinds, and curtains will all effect the temperature in our home. Leverage the use of these things to save energy with your HVAC system. 5. Use Fans Fans disperse the air that comes from your vents to make the temperature in your home even. A well-placed fan can break up a heat pocket that is trapped in a corner or help airflow along a hallway or stairwell. 6. Keep Your Ducts Insulated and Sealed If your ducts are not insulated or sealed, then they could leak heat and lower your HVAC's efficiency. 7. Smart Use of Your Thermostat Use your thermostat's programming features to heat and cool your home strategically throughout your day, and try to limit pushing your system to change your home's temperature more than 20 degrees from the outside temperature. 8. Keep Your Equipment Clean Keep all of the parts of your HVAC system clean so that your equipment can get good airflow. Be sure to change your air filter regularly as well! 9. Upgrade Existing Equipment Certain parts of your HVAC system may be worn down or out-of-date, so you can replace these parts to iron out these efficiency bottle-necks. 10. Invest in a New System If your equipment is out-of-date, you may want to invest in a new system that will be much more efficient and better fit your home's needs. Heat pumps, geothermal systems, and solar power can all be explored to increase your system's efficiency. We are your local HVAC Experts out of Salem, Oregon.
