Driving into Den Helder, North Holland along Dykes We drove up from the fort Kijkduin in North Holland, along the Zeeweg and eventually the Schapendijkje road, all right along the massive earthen dams or dykes. No Dutch boy with his finger in a hole leaking water, but where we drive, we were under sea level! If you look closely, at one point you’ll see a huge ship, much higher then us, sailing into the port of Den Helder or further into the ijsselmeer, also know as lake ijssel to some English folks. The ijsselmeer is a closed off inland sea, which has slowly been reclaimed over the years, but still massive. We also drive past the huge ferry boat to Texel. We see a lof of Dutch Naval activity up in Den Helder and we even almost went onto a base, as this is the capital of the navy. Have heard that more and more naval ships are stations down south in Zeeland though. It is a cool, harbour city. Working class, clean and some great food to eat down there, like we had at Stoom! “Den Helder is a municipality and a city in the Netherlands, in the province of North Holland.
