AMA, or the American Motorcyclist Association, is the premier sanctioning body for motorcycle racing in the United States. While they oversee a wide range of disciplines, their flagship series for dirt track racing is the AMA Grand National Championship. Established in 1954, it was originally designed to find the most versatile rider in the country by combining multiple types of racing into one championship. This included not just mile and half-mile dirt ovals, but also short track, TT (Tourist Trophy) steeplechase courses, and even road races. The series became a proving ground for riders, and its multi-disciplinary format created a generation of incredibly skilled competitors. It produced legendary riders like Kenny Roberts, Jay Springsteen, and others who would later go on to dominate on a global stage in road racing. By the mid-1980s, the road racing portion was spun off into its own series, and the AMA Grand National Championship became the prestigious flat track-only series it is known as today. The San Jose Mile is a historic and iconic event in the world of American motorcycle racing, dating back to 1937. As a key stop on the AMA Grand National Championship circuit, the flat track race held at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds became a premier event, drawing massive crowds of up to 40,000 spectators at its peak popularity in the 1970s. The one-mile dirt oval, which was typically held as an annual event throughout the decade, sometimes it was held twice a year. It tested the skill and bravery of the sport's top competitors, including legendary riders like Jay Springsteen, Kenny Roberts, and Mert Lawwill, who battled for victory on the high-speed track. Known for its intense action and head-to-head finishes, the San Jose Mile played a significant role in the golden age of American dirt track racing, establishing itself as a beloved tradition for fans and a proving ground for champions. 00:00 - Introduction to Grand National Motorcycle Racing 01:28 - Meet Jay Springsteen 01:58 - The Team Concept 02:28 - The Rider-Team Dynamic 03:41 - Track Preparation & Racing Techniques 05:22 - The Importance of the First Race 06:08 - Practice & Rider Profiles 06:41 - Corky Keener's Perspective 07:08 - The Heat Race Begins 09:10 - Look at that Lean 09:51 - Jay’s Final Heat 10:24 - Bike Trouble For availability and licensing inquiries, please contact: https://www.globalimageworks.com/contact Ref: HD 128
