Laura Martin, deputy director of the Oklahoma Historical Society Research Division, explains what the Dawes Rolls are and how you can use them to find your Native American ancestors. Visit https://www.okhistory.org/dawes to search the index. Researchers can use the Dawes Rolls to trace their ancestry to one of the Five Tribes. The Five Tribes include Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Muscogee (Creek), and Seminole nations. In general, the Dawes Rolls list individuals who lived with their nation in Indian Territory, who chose to apply, and were approved by the Dawes Commission. The Dawes Rolls opened in 1898 and closed in 1907; a small number of names were added between 1912 and 1914.
