There have been some stories / rumours over the years about mysterious crypts and passages under the Peterborough Cathedral, running "for miles" under the city. Alas, the truth is, there aren't any...but the stories are not entirely untrue, either. How is that possible? Back in late XIX century, during reinforcement works (when the cracked main tower was basically taken apart and re-built, stone by stone, on stronger foundations), some remains of the earlier, Saxon building were uncovered. It was then decided that these remains (running deeper that the current floor level, hence the "dungeon" feeling) would be preserved, in a form of a small passage, so that earlier stonework could still be accessed and seen. It's worth mentioning that, whilst most of the walls in this hidden feature are of VIII century Saxon origin, some parts date back to Roman times, where an earlier Roman temple was "recycled" by Saxons. Due to safety concerns, the "dungeon" is not normally open to the public. I am therefore taking the liberty of sharing a short film I made during my private tour there, as any data/photograps of the mysterious place are rather scarce on the net.
