His body will remain lying in state until his funeral on Wednesday. Papandreou had died early Sunday, aged 77. Thousands of Greeks flocked to Athens' main Orthodox Cathedral to pay homage to their one-time leader, socialist Andreas Papandreau. He died early Sunday, aged 77. Within hours of Papandreou's death, his body was moved to the Cathedral, where it will lie in state until his funeral on Wednesday. His present wife, and now widow, Dimitra, was struggling to contain her grief as she stood near her husband's coffin. Dimitra, together with close associates, found it difficult getting through the crowds that packed the exit of the Cathedral. Later to arrive was the late Premier's son, George, who's also the minister of education. Andreas Papandreou's death came as a shock to the Greeks despite his years of bed health, especially heart problems. He had fought for democracy during the dictatorship of 1967-74, and led the country through a decade of great change in the 1980s. Not everyone agreed with him, but Papandreou's death was still a shock to Greece. "The End," said one newspaper headline. And outside PASOK HQ -- Papandreou's socialist party -- a huge poster of the former Prime Minister and socialist leader, with black ribbons of mourning.
