Starting the South Roof Restoration | 16th-Century Château Roof Work Begins

Today marks the start of a major new phase in the restoration as we begin work on the front (south) roof of the 16th-century section of the château. Before moving fully onto the south elevation, we first secure and make good the west section, ensuring everything is properly finished and stable before progressing. Once complete, attention turns to the front of the building. 🏰 South Roof – Strip-Out & Preparation We begin by removing the old roof tiles, exposing the structure beneath. The cement work under the eaves (kicks of the roof) is then renewed, bringing everything back to the correct level and ensuring proper weather protection. At the same time, we remove the old guttering around the turret, preparing the area for new, correctly fitted gutters later on. 🪵 Rebuilding the Roof Layers With the base cemented and levelled, work continues in gradual sections: Boarding over the old battens Lining the wooden boards Installing the new roof battens on top, ready for tiling This step-by-step approach allows us to work carefully across the roof while maintaining protection at all times. 🧱 19th-Century Section & Valley Repairs As part of making good the valley between the 16th- and 19th-century sections, a portion of the 19th-century roof had to be stripped back and restored. The 19th-century section is the largest part of the château and will be fully restored at a later date, but this work ensures the valley connection is sound and watertight.
