There are many benefits of wood chips in a garden. Also, using deep mulch and wood chips in a chicken run has many benefits. In this video we discuss why you should get wood chips and how to get free wood chips - an abundant, valuable to free resource. Woodchips is often a waste product for most tree service companies. It is a mixture of chipped tree branches and leaves. It's a great medium for making compost. A pile of wood chips is great fun for chickens, who will quickly turn it into compost while they search for worms and other critters hiding in the pile. Benefits of using wood chips #1 It's a free resource. You will be helping most tree companies who otherwise will be paying to empty their woodchip trucks. By taking this resource, you save them money and you receive a product that has many uses and benefits on a homestead. How to get free woodchips: A. Check out www.getchipdrop.com to request free woodchips. You can even get logs from getchipdrop.com if you want that. B. Call the tree companies directly because not all companies are on the getchipdrop website. C. Additionally, you can check with your county. Sometimes there have an area where you can go and shovel a few barrel fulls if you don't want a whole truck load dumped on your property. Remember that this method is more work on your part but you have control over how much wood chips you get. We prefer for the chips to be dropped because we use a lot of wood chips and have it everywhere. #2 Quick Compost Chickens will turn the woodchips into compost as they search for yummy worms and bugs in the pile #3 Little or No Smell from keeping chickens The wood chips serves as a thick mulch in the chicken area or run. This way chicken droppings are absorbed, and as the chickens scratch they help maintain the area preventing any odors or smells. #4 Dry chicken run Again the wood chips absorbs water and moisture keeping everything dry. We live in Georgia and used to have problems with mud after a heavy rain fall. We do not have that problem anymore. The chips is a great solution. #5 Save time and money No time and money spent cleaning and sweeping the chicken area. The wood chips and the chickens together maintain and clean the area, while generating rich compost at the same time. #6 Improve soil texture and fertility We had hard dry Georgia clay when we arrived 6 years ago. Over time, the soil has changed where ever we have applied the woodchip cover. The soil is now moist and rich in organic matter. We have improved the fertility by adding compost from the chicken run and covering it with fresh wood chips.
