The Mentalist 4x23: Red Rover Red Rover - Jane's breakdown scenes 4x23 is an intriguing episode. Some viewers believe Jane’s breakdown is real. The way the scenes are done, there is some ambiguity. Here are my reasons why I believe this is a complex ruse, not an actual breakdown: a) At the cemetery, Wainwright states that Jane hasn’t talked much. I think this is when Jane is making a decision about what he needs to do. b) Jane doesn’t tell Lisbon because in the past, he has already stated that deniability is her friend. He doesn’t want to pull her in to any further danger than she already is. When she gets suspended, he isn’t happy. If she’s in danger, he kinda freaks out. So the best way for him to concentrate on what he needs to do is to exclude her from his plan. c) I believe Jane purposely fails and misreads so that there can be a public trail of his “breakdown.” This also includes the scene at the restaurant, where the staff know him by name (this may be a favorite restaurant he used to go with his family, and he returns often enough that they remember him). He wants to give the impression that RJ’s anniversary reminder has affected him and therefore he has lost his focus. This would be the talk of CBI and the law enforcement community, which would reach RJ’s ears through his spy network. In Season 2, Kristina’s disappearance does make him manic, but he still is able to function. In Season 3, he is more in control of the situation, and he includes the team in the beginning of his plan. Now in Season 4, he has another opportunity to lure RJ but he needs to exclude the team until RJ bites. As we learn in the next episode, it takes six months for RJ to bite the bait. d) He “gets drunk” (keep in mind he has a high tolerance as we saw in 3x10 Jolly Red Elf) and burns his RJ files outside on the balcony, likely to further show any spies watching him. Maybe it could be for RJ who is watching from a distance. We also already know that there are spies within CBI, so his “office” needs to look like he had an actual breakdown. Burning the files don’t necessarily affect him because he would have memorized all the details at this point, so the information is not really lost. Lisbon mentions that he burned his files, which seems to indicate those are not original copies but extra copies for him. e) He is found sleeping in Lisbon’s office. As much as he has grown accustomed to hanging out in Lisbon’s office, this seems to be done on purpose so that he can be found and publicly questioned. He wants Wainwright to see it. f) Hitting the suspect on the back of the head into the coffin seems shocking. However, at this point, Jane already knows that Marx is guilty and that Marx buried Castro alive in a box. Jane wants Marx to feel what Castro felt — the same way he wants to “slice” up RJ the way he did his wife and daughter, so this approach is not out of character for Jane. This scene might be why this season has already shown us some crazy stuff in 4x07 when he sets Panzer up to be killed by RJ, and in 4x11 when he frames Panzer’s first victim’s father (who committed suicide) in order to save Agent Darcy from RJ’s stalking. Both of these episodes do bring into question the depth of Jane’s insanity, to lead up to this episode’s even crazier antics. But we the audience seem to accept it because Panzer was a serial killer and the father of the victim was portrayed as a hero for killing Panzer. Now we are faced with another morally ambiguous approach to justice. Knowing that Marx buried Castro alive to hide the fact that Marx was stealing money just seems to strip away our sympathy for Marx. Even Lisbon seems to gloss over this, even though she is initially aghast at Jane’s actions. e) I don’t think Jane hates Wainwright. Jane has been able to get along with all their superiors for the most part. But Jane needs to be publicly fired, and when Wainwright only suspended him, he decided to go for the jugular and hit Wainwright where it hurts so that Wainwright would fire him. Jane needs this to happen so that part 2 of his plan will look authentic. Part 2 involves Jane isolating himself and looking destitute. In previous seasons, Jane was waiting for RJ to strike. Now, Jane wants to change it to where he makes RJ to come to him.
