The BIG Poppy Knit. BBC Radio Nottingham. Nottingham Contemporary. BBC Radio Nottingham held a 3 day event at the Nottingham Contemporary to remember the 11,000 fallen Nottinghamshire men during World War 1 (WW1) 1914-1918. One poppy for each of the fallen. The response by listeners in the lead up was simply incredible, with more than 90,000, yes.. 90,000!! hand knitted poppies made by individuals and business's across the County. Well done to all who became a part of this. I hope I've captured the atmosphere for you all to enjoy and reminisce. On a side note, at 1:31 a little girl can be heard asking her mum "Mummy, why is that soldier smoking?" (referring to a soldier on some old film footage). The smoking ban (smoking in public places) was introduced on 1st July 2007. There is now a generation growing up who will see it strange to see people smoke. That obsevant child's words made me pause and contemplate on another small but significant change in history.
