The end of the Great War in 1918 did not mean an end to conflict and strife around the world. New communist and anarchist movements sprouted all over the world, emboldened by the success of the Russian Revolution and the promise of a better world. The United States of America was no exception, but few could have imagined that the trial of a shoemaker and a fishmonger for murder would become one of the most significant trials of the twentieth century, at the center of the battle between those who wished to overthrow what they saw as an unjust system and those who wished to preserve the status quo. Please note that this program was made in 1995. In 2005, it was revealed that Fred Moore, one of Sacco and Vanzetti's defense attorneys, had told the writer Upton Sinclair in 1928 that he believed his clients were guilty. However, Moore's credibility and motives were suspect, as this was following his poor performance and dismissal from the Sacco & Vanzetti case, and it also fails to explain the conflicting evidence and testimony from people like Morelli and Medeiros. Conversely, William Thompson, who replaced Moore as their defense attorney, never doubted their innocence. It is unlikely that the full truth will ever be known after all this time. One of the Great Crimes and Trials 'missing' episodes.
