In this video we will describe the equation for CO2 + H2O and write what happens when CO2 is dissolved in water. When CO2 is dissolved in H2O (water), especially when placed under high pressure as in cans of soda, most of it stays dissolve. This isn’t a chemical reaction, there aren’t any new substances created. CO2 will also react with water and we could write the equation like this. CO2 + H2O = H2CO3 H2CO3 is called Carbonic acid. This is more accuracy written with this symbol to show that it is an equilibrium. Not all CO2 becomes H2CO3, in fact not very much. And we should also note that H2CO3 will dissociate to a small degree and produce HCO3- and a H+ ion. The H+ ion is what lowers the pH and makes it acidic. For something like the oceans, the creates a big problem. As we add more CO2 to the atmosphere by burning fossil fuels, more CO2 is absorbed by the oceans. This creates carbonic acid, and we have what is call Ocean Acidification going on. Needless to say, make the oceans more acidic is not a got thing for marine life.
