Why do we fast? This lecture examines tazkiyah (spiritual purification) as Islam's central transformative objective. Lecture notes: https://hadithunlocked.com/blog/Ramad... The nafs (human soul) naturally inclines toward desire and heedlessness, manifesting in spiritual diseases (arrogance, envy, greed, etc.) and destructive behaviors that seal the heart from divine guidance. Success lies not in ritual alone but in purifying the self from lowly impulses and idolatrous attachments, thereby strengthening two essential relationships: with the Creator through devotion beyond worldly distraction, and with His creation through ethical conduct that builds harm-free societies. Ramadan serves as the annual training ground for this purification. Through controlled hunger and restraint, fasting weakens the nafs, builds sincerity, patience, and gratitude, and strengthens the pillars of faith. Abstaining from the permissible throughout the day is a reminder to also abstain from the impermissible and the detested. The month offers unparalleled divine blessings: magnified rewards, guaranteed forgiveness, accepted supplications, and ultimate entry through Jannah's gate of al-Rayyan. Yet these gifts demand more than abstaining from food: they require guarding the tongue, controlling anger, showing mercy, strengthening family bonds, serving the needy, and deepening connection to the Quran. Islam is not primarily about form or information, but about inner moral, spiritual, and outer ethical transformation. Ramadan is the rehearsal; the rest of the year is the performance. #ramadan #islam #muslim #tazkiyah
