Temperature isn’t just a number on the weather report. It is actually a measure of molecular motion. The faster the molecules in a gas move, the higher the temperature. Understanding this idea helps explain several things pilots deal with every day: • why warm air expands • why warm air becomes less dense • why temperature affects aircraft performance • and why temperature differences drive weather and atmospheric motion If you understand that heat is simply motion at the molecular level, many other concepts in aerodynamics and meteorology begin to make a lot more sense.
