Today we’re checking out the Shiga Kogen area of Nagano Prefecture. Our reporter is Robel Zemichael from Shiga Kogen International Ski School. Our first destination is the local Giant Ski Resort. Along the way we take the Pulse Gondola, which is a new lift completed last winter. The gondola is a really good way to get up the mountain. Visitors can access the individual local ski resorts from the Yamanoeki station at the entrance to Shiga Kogen. The Shiga Kogen mountain height is 6,561 feet, with very low temperatures creating wonderful powder snow. This vast resort is made up of 18 ski areas with over 70 pistes providing a wide variety of views and landscapes. The Snowshoe Guide activity is a popular option in Shiga Kogen. To experience the wilderness of Shiga on this adventure, head to the reception at Yamanoeki station. The area has a significant population of bears, and signs of their winter hibernation can be seen on the tour. Enjoy the natural local air here, and forget about having to wear a mask! The popular Jigokudani Yaen-Koen park area offers a nice alternative to skiing, with sights of wild snow monkeys enjoying the hot springs here. Newborn baby monkeys can also be seen exclusively here in spring and summer. The Teppa Room bar run by the local Tamamura Honten sake brewery near the hotel in Shiga Kogen is a good option for a drink after a hard day of activities. The locale serves a variety of reasonably priced unique and limited craft beers brewed in wine barrels. This is a must for all visitors to Shiga Kogen.
