Afghanistan's opium problem permeates the entire family

Parents and children alike are facing opium addiction in Afghanistan, the world's largest producer of the drug. Of the 1.5 million addicts estimated by the United Nations, about 300,000 are children. Often used as a pain killer or sleeping medicine, the UN Office on Drugs and Crime says parents don't realize the side effects of what they are giving their families. Organisations like Wadan, an NGO, are trying to help, but the country's 90 rehabilitation centres can only address one per cent of the drug using population.
