'The Yama Yama Man' was featured in the Broadway hit 'The Three Twins' and made a star of 20 year old Bessie McCoy who was known as 'The Yama Yama Girl' She dressed in a baggy black clowns pyjama suit with a floppy pointed hat topped with a pom pom, this bogeyman was ready to jump out at anyone unaware. Children hearing these lyrics (see below) must have been scared to death to go to bed. Dancer Irene Foote began imitating McCoy's famous dance and song, she married Vernon Castle, they became one of the first 'ballroom dancers' in the film 'The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle' she is played by Ginger Rogers who re-enacts the yama yama dance. An unusual recording for the great Stanley Kirkby who was more associated with light opera and ballads. Lyrics[edit] Ev'ry little tot at night, Is afraid of the dark you know. Some big Yama man they see, When off to bed they go. Chorus: Yama, Yama, the Yama man, Terrible eyes and a face of tan. If you don't watch out he'll get you without a doubt, If he can. Maybe he's hiding behind the chair,Ready to spring out at you unaware. Run to your mama, For here comes the Yama Yama man. Great big scary eyes you see, So you cover up your head. But that Yama man is there, Standing right beside your bed
