An intense West Coast storm continues to impact California today, with significant snowfall in the mountains, dangerous travel, and widespread rain at lower elevations. Winter Storm Warnings remain in effect as some mountain locations have already picked up more than three feet of snow, with another 2 to 3 feet possible in the highest terrain. I’ll take you live into the Sierra with current conditions, highway impacts, rainfall totals, and a full look at what’s ahead as this active pattern continues across the state. Blizzard conditions hammered the Lake Tahoe region overnight, with dangerous travel, extreme cold, and very heavy snowfall continuing across the Sierra. While there may be a brief lull at times today, conditions remain unsettled with snow showers in the mountains and rain showers at lower elevations. Another round of heavier rain and snow arrives late tonight into tomorrow, keeping Winter Storm Warnings in effect. This storm series has been largely beneficial in terms of water supply, with rainfall totals exceeding half a foot in many locations. In the Sierra, Lake Tahoe has already picked up 2 to 3 feet of snow, and another 1 to 2 feet is possible over the next 36 hours. Avalanche danger is extremely high and remains a very real and ongoing threat. Temperatures are brutally cold. Truckee dropped to 5 degrees this morning, and daytime highs around Lake Tahoe will struggle to reach 32 degrees. Mountain travel is strongly discouraged. Interstate 80 and US Highway 50 have been opening and closing repeatedly and are expected to remain problematic through tonight and tomorrow. This is a very bad time to travel in the Sierra.
