To celebrate February 1st of 2022, The Year of the Tiger, we have two Chinese-made rifles to share with you; the Norinco NHM-90, a semi-automatic variant of the AK-47/AKM and the Norinco SKS Type 56, a copy of the Soviet SKS. Both rifles are chambered for the Russian 7.62x39mm intermediate cartridge. The NHM series is a post-ban Chinese import that entered the USA (1990-1994) in the typical ban configuration consisting of a thumbhole stock, welded muzzle nut, and a neutered gas block/front sight base. We "de-banned" the NHM by adding back an original Polytech furniture set. The gas block/front sight base is from a Bulgarian Type-3, this was done so to retain the cleaning rod as the neutered set had its cleaning rod channel/lugs grinded flat. Original Chinese pre-ban barrel parts are extremely rare so Bulgarian take-offs work just fine with the AK-47 profile barrels found on Chinese AK's. Your standard AKM barrel features a thinner, or pencil barrel profile so those parts won't fit a Chinese AK. Two Rivers Arms in Oklahoma did the bluing work and installation of the gas block/front base. Our NHM came with a blued bolt carrier which isn't common compared to "in the white" finish on most Chinese AK bolt carriers found on the Norinco MAK-90. Check out our NHM-90/MAK-90 comparison video here: • Review: De-banned Norinco NHM-90 and MAK-9... L.L. takes both the Norinco AK and SKS for a snow shoot. Of course both rifles are super reliable with any type of ammunition, we feed them steel exclusively. Let us know what you think of these two Made in China rifles, politics aside...any who we wish you a Happy Lunar New Year! It's especially an auspicious year for those whose zodiac sign is the tiger. *Magazine permanently modified to accept only 10 rounds per Washington SB-5078 which takes affect July 1, 2022.
