After two Covid lockdown measures and two massive rain events, the Hunter Valley Steamfest had returned to Maitland between Friday, April 28th - Sunday, April 30th 2023 with 3801, 6029, 5917 and R766 in attendance along with historic traction engines and vehicles. This is also the first Steamfest that 3801 had attended since it last ran in 2007 and this is also the Steamfest debut of R766 after being converted to standard gauge in 2022. It's also the second non-NSW engine to attend Steamfest since Flying Scotsman during the British locomotive's extended stay in Australia during 1989. See all four steam locomotives in action around Maitland and the Hunter Valley including the ever popular Great Train Race where all four steam locomotives run against a tiger moth bi-plane from Waratah to Maitland in celebration of the festival's belated 35th anniversary.
