Ramon Allones Specially Selected: In the first episode of the third season of the show, we took a look at the new Ramon Allones "Italia" jar - a fine introduction to another great Habanos brand for sure! But now that we're all warmed up, it is with great pleasure that I present to you, the Ramon Allones brand history and cigar review episode - a la Dr. Joe! Specifically, we'll be reviewing the "Specially Selected," a Robustos format cigar that is likely the all-around most popular of the three sizes that account for this small, pre-revolution brand. Yet in the grand scheme of things, the Ramon Allones Specially Selected, or "RASS," as it's often referred to, is largely underrated. Although Ramon Allones was first established somewhere between 1837 and 1845, the "Specially Selected," wasn't added to the line until 1980 - years after the revolution and nationalization of the Cuban Tobacco industry. In fact, interestingly enough, only one of the three vitolas that make up the marca hails from before the revolution - the Small Club Corona. The final vitola, the "Gigantes," did actually exist as part of the original brand, but in name only. The size was changed from a No.109 / Double Robustos to a Prominentes / Double Corona in 1976. This is interesting in that the cigar shares this "historical attribute," with the Partagas Lusitanias, which was also changed from a No.109 to a Double Corona. However, it's not so surprising, considering that both were rolled at the Partagas factory for many years both prior to and after the revolution, until the factory was closed.
