The red-headed vulture (scientific name: Cathartes aura), also known as the turkey vulture, is a New World vulture distributed in the Americas. [2] They are distributed from southern Canada to the southern tip of South America, inhabiting vast to semi-open areas, including subtropical forests, jungles, lawns and deserts. [1] The red-headed vulture is a large bird with a wingspan of 1.7 to 1.83 meters, a body length of 64 to 81 cm, and a weight of 0.85 to 2.26 kg. [3][4][5][6] They are dark brown to black. The head and neck have no feathers and are purple-red. The bill is short, hooked, and ivory. They live in the wild with a lifespan of 16 years, and they can be raised over 20 years old. [7] The red-headed vulture is a scavenger and eats almost only carcasses. [5] They use sight and smell to find food, and fly low to smell the carrion. [5] Their flight relies on the heat flow of the air and rarely flaps their wings. They live in large groups. They don't have a whistling tube, they can only make a low hiss. [8] They will nest in holes, hollow trees or bushes. They can feed two young vultures every year, both of which eat their parents' ruminant liquid to grow up. [9] They have very few natural enemies. [10] They are protected in the United States.
