Once a year, Museum Ludwig's supporting association, Gesellschaft für Moderne Kunst in Cologne (Germany), awards the Wolfgang Hahn Prize to contemporary artists. The prize is named in honor of the late Cologne collector Wolfgang Hahn (1924-1987), who supported European and American avant-garde art in Cologne in many different ways. The prize is endowed with maximum prize money of EUR 100,000 and was given to artists such as James Lee Byars, Günther Förg, Pipilotti Rist, Raymond Pettibon, Mike Kelley, and Andrea Fraser. This year, for the first time in the over twenty-year history of the Wolfgang Hahn Prize, the award honors two artists: Michael Krebber and R. H. Quaytman. Guest Juror Daniel Birnbaum, director of the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, comments: “The discussions within the jury were quite intense, centered on current issues regarding painting today. Quaytman and Krebber, independently from one another, have each produced an autonomous oeuvre over many years that, however, is also quite definitive for the future of painting and serves younger generations as a point of reference. The jury’s decision is very promising—Thomas Bernhard’s theater piece Einfach kompliziert (Simply Complicated) comes to mind.” Wolfgang Hahn Prize, Award Ceremony at Museum Ludwig, Cologne, April 14, 2015.
