4th OIE Global Conference on Animal Welfare

The 4th Global Conference on Animal Welfare was held in December 2017, in Guadalajara, Mexico. Conference website: www.oie.int/welfare-conf2016 This conference follows on from the work of previous Global conferences focusing on the development of strategies and tools for all sectors of animal industries to advance the implementation of OIE standards in all Member Countries. Experience tells us that to implement OIE animal welfare standards within diverse cultural, economic and religious contexts a variety of tools and strategies are needed as well as balanced relationships with committed partners both from the public and private sectors. These tools and strategies highlight both the shift occurring in animal welfare science towards animal-based measures and the development of the ‘One Welfare’ concept. By inviting the experience and knowledge of individuals from a wide range of industries, backgrounds and fields of expertise the OIE furthers the potential for substantial and lasting implementation of the OIE standards and the global improvement of animal welfare. This conference looked to promote awareness and implementation of both established and new OIE standards for animal welfare through the development of tools and strategies.
