Easy guide to using the Footpath app on Apple Watch for offline hiking maps, route planning, and turn-by-turn navigation. In this video, I walk you through how to use Footpath completely independent of your iPhone. You’ll see how to download offline topo maps, plan a hike on your phone or computer, and then send it straight to your watch for turn-by-turn guidance on the trail. We’ll start by creating a hike from scratch inside Footpath, using its simple draw-and-snap route tool. I’ll show you how to add waypoints, view elevation profiles, and use the cue sheet feature to see every turn before you even head out. You’ll also see how the app’s routing adjusts automatically based on your chosen activity—whether it’s hiking, trail running, or cycling—and how you can quickly edit or erase parts of your route. Next, I’ll cover importing GPX files from sites like AllTrails so you can hike pre-planned routes from any source. I also demo Footpath’s robust set of map layers, including live satellite imagery to check snow conditions, USGS topo maps, and 3D satellite views for planning mountain climbs. With the premium subscription, you get dozens of map styles to choose from, all available offline. Finally, we’ll hit the trail with the Apple Watch to see the app in action. You’ll hear voice prompts for upcoming turns and waypoints, see how to access the map with the action button, and watch what happens when you go off-route. I’ll also show how the elevation graph updates for your current climb, and how your completed hike syncs back to your phone for review or export to Apple Health and other tracking tools. If you’ve invested in an Apple Watch Ultra, the Footpath app is the best hiking navigation tool I’ve used for it. This walkthrough covers everything you need to get started, from planning to on-trail navigation, so you can hike with confidence anywhere—no cell signal required. --- Disclaimer: Some of these links are affiliate links where I’ll earn a small commission if you make a purchase at no additional cost to you.
