Umbilical hernias present at birth will most likely to close by the age of 2 to 5 years. These hernias are more common in adult males and are usually associated with obesity. Complications of these hernias include obstruction and strangulation. Surgery for these hernias is straight forward and can be performed with either an open incision or keyhole (laparoscopic) approach.
