Uli Sigg is a Swiss business executive and diplomat who is now known as an avid collector of Chinese contemporary art. In the 1970s, when he first arrived in China, it was business - not art - that first drew him. He worked then for the Swiss company Schindler Elevators to build what would become the very first joint venture between China and the outside world. His firsthand knowledge of China led to his appointment as Swiss ambassador in the 1990s and as a diplomat, he had a deeper understanding of the old country. In particular, he watched Chinese contemporary art flourish through the years, and began seriously collecting China art pieces. Why does his Chinese contemporary art collection matter?
