A frequently asked question I receive in my practice is should I augment breasts using fat grafts or an implant? Fat grafts, in general, are best for very small augmentations. There's a limitation to the amount of fat that will survive when you augment, and that limitation, for most patients, is around 250 ccs, where beyond that amount, there is a lower and lower survival rate for the overall fat. And the last thing you want is a bunch of fat that doesn't survive in the breast. It can cause things like cysts that can require further treatment or just be annoying. For most patients, the best option is either silicone gel, which is my preferred implant for most patients, or a saline implant that will allow a wide variety of sizes, including the more significant augmentations that the average patient would have wanted. We have consistent and beautiful results we're able to achieve with those implants. Both fat grafts or breast implants have a long list of associated potential complications. You have to weigh those versus the benefits of the procedure.
