DXCC stands for DX Century Club and is one of the coveted awards from American Radio Relay League which Amateur Radio operators earn by confirming radio contacts with 100 countries. The term countries as considered for DXCC is slight different from the countries which we think of. It is 100 DXCC entities as per the DeSoto scoring system started in 1935 from an article published in QST magazine. Clinton B. DeSoto, W1CBD, was Assistant to the Secretary, ARRL. The basic rule on deciding countries was the “Each discrete geographical or political entity is considered to be a country”. At present there are 340 Current DXCC entities on the ARRL DXCC Entities List. There is a also a list of 62 Deleted DXCC entities on the ARRL DXCC Entities List. Working deleted entities do not count towards the higher awards of Honor Roll, Top of Honor Roll, 5-Band DXCC, and the DXCC Challenge. I found it rather interesting to note the DXCC list is Copyrighted. ARRL permission is required for use of the list for other than personal use. Though ARRL membership is mandatory for applicants from the United States jurisdiction, it is not so for radio amateurs from the rest of the world. Easiest type of award to go for would be a mixed mode DXCC in which any of the modes of operation may be used. There are separate ones for Phone, CW and digital modes. Separate awards are also there for each of the bands starting from 160 m, all the way up to 3 cm! Separate DXCC is available for satellite operations. Five-Band DXCC is for confirmed contacts in 100 current DXCC entities on each of the five bands 80, 40, 20, 15 and 10 m. Five band DXCC can be endorsed for additional bands of 160, 30, 17, 12, 6 and 2 m. This is only an introduction to the basic concept of DXCC for amateur radio operators. Detailed rules are available at ARRL webpage. Web: https://johnsonfrancis.org/techworld/...
