🏛️ Stalin's Tower of Propaganda That Became the World's Largest Pool In 1931, Joseph Stalin planned the ultimate monument to Communism: The Palace of the Soviets. It was to be the tallest building in the world, crowned by a 300-foot stainless steel statue of Vladimir Lenin. To make way, Stalin ordered the historic Cathedral of Christ the Saviour dynamited to the ground. But Moscow is built on swampland. The massive circular foundation immediately flooded with groundwater. The material cost crippled the state. Then, the 1941 German invasion forced a catastrophic halt. The Palace's colossal steel frame was dismantled and melted down to build tank traps and railway bridges for the war effort. The foundation pit—that huge, flooded scar on the city—was finally repurposed into the world's largest open-air swimming pool, where citizens swam laps in the center of Moscow for decades. Today, the original Cathedral has been faithfully rebuilt in the exact spot, proof that history eventually reclaims its own ground. The Palace of the Soviets remains the ultimate symbol of failed political ambition. Subscribe to Unbuilt Visions for more projects that were defeated by history and reality.
