In this video, I briefly explain the very basics of Irish surnames. In a nutshell - Mac means the “son of”. The female version of Mac becomes Nic. Ó means “descendant of”. The female version of Ó becomes Ní. Fitz comes from the French “fils de”. Curiously French and Latin have had a much bigger effect on the Irish language than English. When I researched this topic a bit more, I have found that the female versions of surnames is far more complicated, so I gave up and stuck with my simple understanding. I also found out that the surname Fitzpatrick actually was not Norman French but Irish who were forced to take a less Irish sounding surname by those dastardly English 😱 ** Please subscribe to my channel and activate the notification button to know when I share new videos ** ⭐️ Find me ⭐️ Instagram: / i_am_irish_matthew Email: [email protected] ☘️ About me ☘️ Hi, my name is Matthew :) I'm Irish and in this channel I will share my knowledge of Irish language and culture.
