Staying Productive and Focused: 5 Tips while working from home At the start of this series, I suggested what I see as the three key factors to successfully working from home; creating a separate work space, staying engaged with our coworkers and finding ways to stay productive and disciplined. Today, we’ll discuss my final point, how to stay productive and disciplined! Depending on the nature of your job, this can be more or less challenging for some folks. Establish a Morning and End of Day Routine: it’s important to establish cues when your day has started and when it has ended. For me, I start with a shower every morning just like I would have done if I were going into the office. I grab my coffee and whatever else I need to get started. Once my laptop is open (in my dedicated work space as we discussed before), I know it’s work time. My end of day routing is a little simpler, I turn off my laptop, leave my workspace and barring an urgent work related matter, I don’t go back to that workspace until the next morning. Plan your day ahead of time: Easier said than done especially if you are constantly bombarded with interruptions and shifting priorities. One of the things I do is create a list, what’s a MUST and what’s a PLUS. So I might have 5 things to get done that have deadlines. Those are musts. Then you should have pluses…sort of like extra credit if I’m able to get to this one thing that’s been sitting on my back burner. This helps me know that I’ve met my daily goals (and you can do this for the entire week too), and also gives me that cue that my work is done for the day. Which leads me to number 3. Maintain regular hours: Everyone’s job is a little different. My job for example, doesn’t really have set hours, whether I’m working from home or not. It’s kind of like I said in planning your day, my job is more task oriented than working hours. However, if I didn’t monitor my time and maintain a regular schedule, it would be really easy for to fall into a rut where I start my day later and later or finish too early or too late. Take specific set breaks: When you’re at home, it’s very easy to jump up and put a load of laundry in and 15-30 minutes flashes by that you hadn’t planned. Ideally, you set up break times for yourself so you know, ok, at 10AM, I’m going to break for 15 minutes and then accomplish whatever you want to do in than 15 minutes. I’ve read in numerous articles that you should take frequent short breaks. If need be, put it on your calendar with a pop up reminder. Know yourself: We all have specific times of day when we are more productive than others. I read a great blog post from salesgravy.com, which by the way is an awesome website filled with tips, tricks, helpful hints, mostly geared toward sales careers but can apply to many people in all sorts of positions. This article talked about working within your circadian rhythms. I strongly recommend you check out the article because I won’t do it justice. Suffice it to say, the gist is that you get in tune with your own peaks and dips in energy. Perhaps save some of the work that requires the most energy or thought for those times. According to the article, for many people those times are late morning and late afternoon but you’ll have to find your own peaks and dips and manage your workload accordingly https://salesgravy.com/your-circadian...
