TsuShiMaMiRe warms up the crowd for Peelander-Z at the Black Market In El Paso, TX on 11.3.10. Sorry about the poor audio quality - my Sony just can't handle 120+ dB without an external mic, and there was no way I was going to risk my Rode in the crowded environment - as it was, I was hit in the face twice (one by Peelander Red), and the camera nearly bit the dust a few times. TsuShiMaMiRe is: Guitar/Vocal : Mari Bass/Chorus: Yayoi Drums/Chorus: Mizue From their Facebook page: Blending elements of rock, punk, Avant Garde, free jazz, ska, surf, and that funky "je ne sais quoi" possessed by many Japanese girl bands, TsuShiMaMiRe comprises Yayoi (bass), Mari (guitar and vocals), and Mizue (drums). The band was formed in 1999 when the girls were still in college. While performing at local venues, TsuShiMaMiRe recorded the demo singles "Hamburger Set" (1999) and "Bloody Mohawk" (2001). The band signed a recording deal with a Tokyo based independent record label, Benten Label (Petty Booka, Titan Go King's) and released the first album "Pregnant Fantasy" in the summer 2004. In the same year, the girls joined Bleach, Noodles, and Kokeshi Doll on a 2004 US tour, including the obligatory stop at the South by Southwest (SXSW) Music Festival in Austin, TX. TsuShiMaMiRe experienced six US tours with over 150 live shows by 2010. In 2008, TsuShiMaMiRe collaborated with a nationwide popular cartoon television series, The Powerpuff Girls in their mini album, "Six Mix Girls." In their 10th anniversary, the band made their major debut from FlyingStar Records, JVC Victor Entertainment. The band made hit songs and gained the fan base in both US and their home, Japan. Containing a mix of cuts from their demo singles and new songs, the sound is tight and well-executed, while preserving a refreshing, playful/vicious spontaneity and explosiveness. Whereas Japanese punk bands often prefer to include sing-along, 50s style elements in their songs, TsuShiMaMiRe appears to be influenced more by rock, punk, noise, and jazz, and the guitar and bass often engage in wild riff interplay, giving their music a welcome spaciousness that invites repeat listens. Lyrical content is, as we have come to expect from Japanese girl bands, way out there, ranging from a song about how fish paste feels when it is cooked ("Camaboco") to an imaginary conversation between a newborn baby and its mother ("Pregnant Fantasy"). They have just released their second full-length album "Sex on the Beach" in spring of 2010 in Japan and on August 31st in North America on Good Charamel Records. SOTB will also be released on CD in September in North America with an English version of "Strobo" (Strobe) as a Bonus Track. Prepare to experience crazy world of TsuShiMaMiRe!
