When the wicking occurs into the spray foam insulation in cold climates of the northern states and Canada, this amplifies and promotes water to find a path to the inside wall cavity. This is because when the temperatures drop the water trapped in the spray foam freezes. As we continue to heat our buildings and homes this promotes the water in the foam insulation to thaw thus encouraging the water to find the least resisted path to the interior as the exterior area is the last to thaw. Now that the path into the wall assembly or cavity has been established it slowly provides an environment for rot and mold to develop and thrive in the deterioration of a buildings structure. I can safely say that the most prone area to fail from water infiltration on an exterior wall envelope system, sometimes compared to the skin on our body, is amplified in the penetrations of the building. The largest open penetrations of any structure is the window and door areas, and, the most prone areas that fail to date in an exterior wall assembly. It typically starts in the lower corners of the rough opening, and is due to either flawed or poor installations, not windows and doors leaking.
