Presentation: "Why should universities support student business incubators by Vladimir Popov (KBTU Startup Incubator, Kazakhstan)" PhD Thesis: "Framework and Ecosystem for business incubation of technological startups among the students: methodological foundations of formation and development mechanisms" PhD Article: "Shift in paradigm: business incubation of startups at universities during the educational discipline inside of curriculum rather than extracurricular activities of students" Qualitative Problem-Driven Research focused on the UTBI field: Science - CS Object - UTBI (University Technology Business Incubation) Dominating Method - Experiment Problem Statement (PS). Objectives Object: student-entrepreneur, young startuper Model: business incubation not as facultative, but as the lessons (not overtime, but in class) Overall PS: How to give an incubation program into every university? Sub1: Too expensive to have a student business incubator. Incubation as elective discipline is much cheaper and easier than standalone CEI (Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation) Sub2: Growing of the innovation ecosystem. Government benefits from activation of techpreneurs via universities. It’s much easier to reach students and youngsters are open to the everything new. Sub3: Absence of the quick results. Successful innovation happens from students not instantly during the education, but later on their working places. Future engineers with entrepreneurial mindset transform their companies inside out and act as intrapreneurs and agents of change. Student startups were not scrutinized in the rigorous appropriate manner: exactly student-startups exactly technological (IT) based firms (TBF) exactly in developing countries exactly in “lagging universities”, bottom 80% (TOP20 can copy the world’s best practices by having resources) Contribution (aka Novelty) - student startups have to be incubated during the study time, not overtime extracurricular activity. Totally practical contribution! Significance - do we make the world a better place? YES! Standard way and it’s problems: Go to Entrepreneurship Center (usually Technology Business Incubator (TBI) Attend it in your free time Create Technology Based Firms (TBF) University Problems: Hard to find knowledgeable manager of the Entrepreneurship Center Pay salary to TBI staff Student Problems: Consciousness of students: unserious, undergrads barely know what they want Longterm motivation: “highest highs” and hardly overcoming “lowest lows” Evaluating marks of other subjects higher than attainable entrepreneurship skills Avoidable milestones: deadlines for every step Absence of the structured plan to develop ideas into Product Digestible incubation format with intermediary controls such as quizzes, mid-term, end-term, final exam Proposed approach: incubation program - elective discipline in “flipped class” manager of curricula business-incubator - teacher with video-lectures from the field experts incubatees - students with initial self-motivation and later motivation by marks in transcript incubation space - lecture-halls and startup’s corner in coworking The largest share of articles appeared in Technovation (36), Journal of Technology Transfer (24), Research Policy (14) and R&D Management (10) Polish the framework and apply it in different world locations, measure achieved results, gather data and compare. List of universities who are interested in embedding the syllabus of the subject in to their curriculums: Give a chance to students to go all the way from Idea to Product! ===================================== 🌐 NU Conference “Impact Central: Bridging Social Development and Entrepreneurship in Central Asia” on 22-23 February 2024 at Nazarbayev University!
