They arrived expecting hunger, ruin, and defeat then America’s roaring factories shattered everything they believed about war. In 1943–45, thousands of German POWs shipped to the U.S. stepped off trains and into a nation running like a machine. Declassified camp reports and Red Cross inspections noted their disbelief at endless freight cars, overflowing stores, and round-the-clock production. While the German army rationed steel, America built 300,000+ aircraft, 88,000 tanks, and 2.4 million trucks a flood of Shermans, B-17s, and Liberty Ships that powered Allied victory from Normandy to the Bulge. POWs later recalled: “You could feel the war being manufactured.” WWII wasn’t only fought at the front it was won on the American homefront. The shock wasn’t kindness… it was capacity.
