Today we check out Runcorn Pavilions, it’s been closed for many of years now, I think of your from Runcorn, you been to a party here… had 3 large function rooms, had amazing community support behind it, Abit history behind it…. ICI Recreation Club (Early 20th Century) • The site originally belonged to ICI (Imperial Chemical Industries) — one of Britain’s largest chemical employers in Runcorn at the time. • It began as a recreation club for ICI employees, built to provide social and sporting facilities: including a bar, billiard room, ballroom, stage, bowling greens, tennis courts, pitches for football, cricket, hockey, and even a rifle range. • The clubhouse construction at Sandy Lane, Weston Point dates back to the early 1920s, built to replace earlier wooden buildings after a fire. An extension was added in 1933. 🎖 Mid-Century Use & Community Life • The club thrived as a community and social hub for workers and local residents. At its peak membership in the 1940s, it reportedly included over 2,400 members, representing most of the local ICI workforce. • During World War II, parts of the building were repurposed for wartime services (e.g., government offices), and outdoor areas were used by the Home Guard and military police. • The club’s wide range of amenities made it a focal point for sport, entertainment, and social events in the Weston Point and wider Runcorn community. 🏡 Later Years – Pavilions & Decline • In the 1990s, the club was rebranded as the Pavilions. • Over time, changes in industrial employment, leisure habits, and economic pressures led to reduced use and support for large social clubs like this one. • The Pavilions eventually closed permanently in late 2017 after decades of service to the local community. Plans were later submitted to demolish it and redevelop the site for housing. 🏟 Sporting Legacy – Football at The Pavilions • The Pavilions site also became known locally as a sports ground — especially as the home of Runcorn Town FC in later years. #halton #widnes #runcorn #bridge #roofing #abandoned #abandonedplaces
