Sibelius' 'Two Pieces for Orchestra', Op. 45, rose from 2 independent pieces composed 6 years apart. "Dryadi" ("The Dryad") has remained the more popular of the two pieces, but both have been somewhat lost in Sibelius' massive output; "Dryadi" and "Tanz-Intermezzo" ("Tanz" meaning "dance") are now considered, perhaps, minor works when placed against his more popular pieces. The first piece, "The Dryad", was composed in 1910 as an impressionistic tone poem or, as Sibelius described it, a "tone picture for orchestra"; incidentally, a Dryad is a mythical Greek tree nymph. The second piece, "Tanz-Intermezzo" was originally composed in 1904, revised three years later, and then set aside to await its counterpart, "The Dryad". "The Dryad", I was informed by my friend "schlesmail", was not posted on YouTube and I cannot endure that injustice. So, here is Sibelius' "Two Pieces for Orchestra", his Opus 45, in its entireity, including "The Dryad" and "Dance-Intermezzo". Performing both pieces is the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra led by up-and-coming Finnish conductor Pietari Inkinen. Enjoy!
