The nation has been marking the 75th anniversary of VE Day through the socially distant lockdown. A two minute silence at eleven am was led by Prince Charles. The anniversary is being adapted since outdoor activities have been cancelled because of the lockdown measures. The retirement home for British veterans, where 290 people have been living, revealed that five of the deaths occurred in the home, while four died while receiving hospital treatment elsewhere. A further 58 residents have so far recovered after testing positive or showing symptoms. Leaders across Europe are marking VE Day with small scale ceremonies As much of Europe still remains in lockdown, French President Emmanel Macron laid a wreath at the statue of General de Gaulle amid empty streets. The German chancellor Angela Merkel paid respects to the victims at her country's war memorial. The government have urged people to maintain social distancing through the bank holiday. Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab has told the public to follow the guidance and resist the urge to linger outdoors this bank holiday weekend, despite the sunshine and warm temperatures that has been forecast. The Prime Minister is expected to announce a very limited update to lockdown measures on Sunday. And the UK rapper Ty has died aged 47 from complications from coronavirus. The London born musician died on Thursday after contracting pneumonia while recovering from the virus. He was an influential figure on the UK music scene, releasing four successful albums and winning a Mercury Music Prize nomination in 2004.
