Legendary actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, were found dead in their Santa Fe, New Mexico, home on Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2025. The Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office held a press conference on Friday, March 7, to provide updates into the investigation of Hackman and Arakawa's deaths. Chief medical examiner Heather Jarrell announced that Hackman's cause of death was Alzheimer's disease and heart disease. Arakawa died of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a rare disease. Investigators said Arakawa likely died a week before Hackman. In a Feb. 28 press conference, the sheriff's office reported that "last event" data from Hackman's pacemaker indicated he may have died more than a week before he was found.
