November 2011 - Dear friends and supporters of the Oratorio ... The Central Pennsylvania Oratorio Singers will present their fall concert on November 13 at 3:00pm in the sanctuary of Market Square Presbyterian Church, Harrisburg. This year we present two works by the two great masters of the Classical Era in Western tonal music: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Franz Joseph Haydn. The Mozart "Vesperae solennes de Confessore" or, simply, "Vespers" was written for an evening service at the Cathedral in Salzburg, Austria. It displays the beautiful and powerful writing that Mozart would demonstrate in his later "Requiem" setting, and is famous for the exquisite soprano aria, "Laudate Dominum." The Haydn "Missa Brevis" is nicknamed the "Little Organ Mass" because of a prominent organ solo in the "Benedictus" movement. All of the charm and grace of Hadyn is contained in this shorter work. In addition to the 65-voice chorus, 18-piece orchestra and fine solo singing from individual chorus members, this performance will feature New York soprano Sharla Nafziger in the "signature" solos of Laudate Dominum (Mozart) and Benedictus (Haydn). The "Little Organ Mass" will also feature the sound of a new "continuo" organ purchased in memory of Dr. Pierce Getz and built by Vagi Organ Builders of Budapest, Hungary. This will be an afternoon of wonderful music that you will not want to miss! The performance takes place in our new home, Market Square Presbyterian Church, 20 S. Second Street, Harrisburg, PA. Tickets for the concert will be available at the door, but please consider giving special support for our expenses by becoming a patron. Patrons will have names listed in the program booklet and receive complimentary tickets to the concert. There are three levels of patronage: $50 -- two tickets, $75 -- three tickets, $100 -- four tickets. Checks may be made out to "Market Square Presbyterian Church" with "CPOS" written on the memo line. We need special support in order to present these great major works as their composers created them. Your support is much appreciated. I hope to see you at the concert. Sincerely, Eric R. Riley, Conductor P.S.: Please consider supporting the CPOS.Thank you!
