Before his parinibbana Buddha gave his alms bowl to the Licchavis of Vaishali. Lichhavis built a large stupa to mark this event. The stupa was lost for centuries and was finally excavated in 1998 by the Archaeological Survey of India. But what happened to his Alms bowl? Did it really fall into the hands of the Taliban of Afghanistan? And what happened when Taliban found the Budda’s Bowl while they were destroying all the Buddhist artifacts displayed at the National Museum of Afghanistan in Kabul? In Vaishali Buddha announced his approaching Parinibbana and he started his final journey along with his disciples. In deep sorrow, the Lichhavis of Vaishali kept following him towards Kushinagar and they were not willing to return. Finally to persuade them to return Buddha created an illusion of a river which finally compelled them to return. He gave them his alms bowl as a memorial and asked them to return to their respective homes. Later the Licchavis built a mud stupa in memory of that event. This mud stupa was enlarged by King Ashoka during the third century BC. The Stupa is now known as Kesariya Stupa and is the highest stupa in the world.
