Follow: / ericplaysbass -- :( Audioslave and Soundgarden played supporting roles in my formative years, particularly Audioslave. There were two albums my dad always seemed to have out of their CD cases at any given time: Zeppelin's "Physical Graffiti," and Audioslave's "Out of Exile" (and sometimes their s/t debut). He would always rave in particular about Audioslave, telling me to listen to the singer and just the groove the band was putting out there. Once I had my own portable music device, Audioslave was a frequent choice to my daily soundtrack. In particular, I seemed to most strongly resonate with the s/t album. Even as I read the myriad of negative critical opinions posted by bloggers and reviewers online, I still held fast to many of the songs. Cochise blew my mind every time, followed by gut-wrenching riff after riff after riff. Of course, as a curious youth, I scoured the Internet and looked into Cornell's personal life, revealing drug addiction battles up to that album and a troubled, lonely childhood. While I couldn't relate to the drug addiction, I definitely related to the childhood, as even in the midst of many friends I always harbored feelings of being the outcast, the loner, the weird one that no one could relate to totally. Hell, even today, I share many core interests that aren't common with most of the people I know, and that can be challenging sometimes. Doing big arena tours doesn't seem to be quite what everyone always imagines it to be, and perhaps decades of stress from doing that caught up to Chris later in life complicated with his other mental disorders/diseases. None of us can know for sure what went through his mind that made him determine that the only exit was permanent. Thanks for all the great music and passion, Chris.
