🔹🔸During Leg 3 of the expedition in October, the team successfully deployed 185 Baited Remote Underwater Video Systems (BRUVS) and conducted 9 deep-sea submersible dives mainly around the islands of Savai‘i. These surveys explored a range of depths and habitats, capturing some amazing footage in the mesophotic zone. 🔹🔸The preliminary results shows impressive diversity and biomass of fish, providing a comprehensive look at Samoa’s deep and mesophotic ecosystems. At least 6 new records of species were encountered during the expedition. Among the expedition’s most exciting findings was the recording of a Sixgill shark, the first confirmed sighting of this species in Samoan waters. Though it is known in some of our other Pacific neighbors, its presence here marks a significant addition to Samoa’s marine species records and highlights the ecological connectivity of our ocean region. 🔹🔸This work represents an important milestone for Samoa’s ongoing efforts under the Samoa Ocean Strategy, advancing scientific understanding of deep-sea biodiversity and informing future conservation and management of our ocean. 🔹🔸The Ministry is pleased to share this 10-minute video showcasing highlights from the Inkfish Expedition 2025.
