WALKS IN DORSET at MINTERNE MAGNA & BUCKLAND NEWTON (4K)

In this episode of my series “Walks in Dorset”, I take a 6 mile circular walk at From Minterne Magna (located 10 miles North of Dorchester) Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Fiver. I parked my car at the Minterne House Gardens car park opposite the church (small donation required) and started off with a look around the Church of St Andrew in the village. My route then took me North East, out of Minterne Magna, along the Southern side of Dogbury Hill before joining a section of The Hardy Way to Gales Hill. After crossing a road, I continued along the side of Ridge Hill and down into the pretty village of Buckland Newton where there was a church & pub to explore. I then initially headed North to a reservoir before continuing along a bridleway Westwards to Lyons Head Farm & on to Dogbury Plantation. My final leg took me down past the old school and close to the River Cerne, back to Minterne Magna. I finished off my walk with a look around Minterne Gardens (£10 entrance. Dog allowed on lead) and a visit to the cafe. NB: The Buckland Newton Village website advises us that "over the door into the church (Church of Holy Rood) is a 12th century representation of Christ in majesty previously set in a niche high on the tower". There is a picture of it in my video at 13 mins 39 seconds. This is not the "much older relic of the past enshrined above the door" mentioned about the church by Arthur Mee in his book "Kings England Dorset" - which in fact , according to Mee, was "a rude carving of a saint dug up in the vicar's garden and may have belonged to the church the Saxons built a thousand years ago". I am not sure if that "rude carving" still exists elsewhere in the church?
